Dec. 12, 2009 – Three Bulldog wrestlers reached the quarterfinals but Colton Schmitz was the only member to place at the University of Nebraska-Kearney Loper Open on Saturday. Schmitz finished sixth in the 141-pound bracket.
The freshman won his first two matches before falling with about 19 seconds left in the second period in the quarterfinals. Schmitz reeled off two more wins before dropping the wrestleback semi-final match 5-2 and the fifth place match 7-5 to the same competitor that pinned him earlier.
Loyde Braidlow (285) also won his first two bouts to advance to the quarterfinals but lost 3-0 and by pinfall to end the day at 2-2.
Ryan Banning (133) picked up a tech fall win and a pinfall victory in his first two matches but was then put on his back in his final two to also finish at 2-2 on the day.
Alex Maus (149) and Andy Bader (157) also finished the tournament with 2-2 records.
The team will next be in action after the New Year as they will head to the Knox College Duals (
