Nov. 4, 2009 – In the final regular season regional rankings of the 2009 season, the Truman women’s soccer team slid two spots to No. 5 in the South Central region while the Truman men’s soccer team once again stayed at No. 3.
The NCAA tournament brackets for both sports will be released via a Webcast selection show on NCAA.com at 6 pm (central) on Monday, Nov. 9.
The Bulldog women (13-3-3) dropped from 3rd to 5th following a 1-1 record last week. Truman defeated Washburn on the road before losing its first contest in 12 matches on Sat., Oct. 31 at Central Missouri. Truman’s draw on Tuesday with Missouri Western was not included in this set of rankings.
West Texas A&M moved into the region’s top spot, while Incarnate Word and St. Edward’s held the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds. Current MIAA leader Nebraska-Omaha jumped ahead of Truman into fourth, while Midwestern State rounded out the top-six that would qualify for the NCAA tournament. Abilene Christian, Central Oklahoma, UCM and Northwest Missouri filled out the remainder of the top-ten.
In the MIAA, UNO (region No. 4) wraps up this week with road contests at Southwest Baptist on Thursday and Central Missouri (region No. 9) on Saturday. Currently, the Bulldogs and Mavericks are tied with 37 MIAA points, but UNO holds the advantage of having played one fewer contest.
Should the Bulldogs win at Emporia State on Thursday and UNO split its matches, the teams would tie for the conference championship at 40 MIAA points. However, UNO would earn the MIAA’s automatic qualifier for the post-season due to head-to-head goal differential. UNO defeated Truman, 4-1, in Omaha, Neb., on Sept. 12, while Truman beat UNO, 1-0, in Kirksville on Sept. 26.
The MIAA isn’t the only conference with post-season implications at hand this week though, as final contests in the Lone Star and Heartland conferences are also taking place.
West Texas A&M (region No. 1) and Central Oklahoma (region No. 8) hold the top two seeds in this week’s LSC tournament, with unranked Texas Woman’s seeded third in front of Midwestern State (No. 6), Abilene Christian (No. 7) and Texas A&M-Commerce (unranked in region). The champion of the LSC tournament receives an automatic bid, and action runs from Thursday through Sunday in Canyon, Texas.
In the Heartland, Incarnate Word (region No. 2) holds a one-point edge on St. Edward’s (No. 3) in the race for its conference championship. No other HC team is within striking distance for the conference’s automatic bid, leaving UIW and SEU alone at the top with one match each to play.
On the other side, the Truman men (12-3-1) wrapped up the scheduled portion of its season on Tuesday afternoon with a 4-1 win against Hannibal-LaGrange. The squad’s loss to Columbia (Mo.) College was not factored into this week’s rankings due to the Cougars competing at the NAIA level, but Truman found itself once again behind West Texas A&M and Midwestern State.
WTAMU closes out its season at Northeastern (Okla.) State on Sunday, while MSU finished its regular season with a 4-1 win against Northeastern last Sunday.
Only the top two seeds in the South Central region on the men’s side qualify for the tournament.
