Oct. 23, 2009 (JOPLIN, Mo.) – Senior Riley Mahn got the Truman women’s soccer team on the board, and sophomore Jaclyn Schumann added an insurance goal in the 76th minute to help the Bulldogs pick up a 2-0 road win at Missouri Southern on a cool and windy Friday afternoon.
Mahn scored her fourth goal of the season less than ten minutes into the second half, converting on a feed from fellow senior Katie Reuck. Schumann then gave the ’Dogs (12-2-2, 11-1 MIAA) an insurmountable lead with 14:06 to play following a Kelsey Twellman corner kick. After Twellman put the ball in play, it was junior Beth Bystrom who notched her team-leading fifth assist of the season by setting up Schumann for the insurance tally and her second score of the year.
Truman out-shot MSSU, 17-6 (11-4 on goal), and took eight corners to just two for the host Lions. Sophomore goalkeeper Jayne Grisham picked up her eighth shutout – and the team’s 11th – of the season by making four saves.
With the win, Truman picked up a season sweep of Missouri Southern, who fell to 4-12 overall (2-10 MIAA). The Bulldogs, ranked fifth in the region according to the latest NCAA South Central poll, also maintained a two-point advantage on Nebraska-Omaha with four matches to play in the race for the conference championship. Both teams will spend the majority of the rest of the regular season on the bus, as each squad wraps up the season with three road matches of their final four.
The Bulldogs will play their regular season home finale on Monday afternoon at 2 pm against Missouri Western (6-9-1, 4-7-1 MIAA). An Olivia Hayes goal with just 25 seconds to play in the second overtime helped the purple and white escape St. Joseph with a 1-0 victory on Oct. 1.
