Oct. 21, 2009 – For the second time this season, the Truman men’s soccer team put up a half-dozen goals against an opponent, as the 17th-ranked Bulldogs rolled to a 6-1 home win against Texas-Permian Basin on Wednesday afternoon.
Truman (11-2-1) dominated possession throughout, blasting 29 shots (16 on goal) and taking ten corner kicks. The ’Dogs took a bit of time getting on the board, as it wasn’t until the 35th minute when junior Bobby Larkin scored following a pass from senior Ben Green that went across the box all the way to the far post. Senior Matt Taylor made it 2-0 with just over a minute to play in the first half when fellow senior Drew Pauk headed a loose ball off a corner kick across the goal box to a waiting Taylor.
Green then added to the day’s total with back-to-back goals just 59 seconds apart mid-way through the second half, before Matthew Sanderson logged his second goal of the season just two minutes after Green’s second goal to give Truman a 5-0 lead.
However, in the midst of the flurry of activity, UTPB broke up the shutout with a goal just 17 seconds after the re-start to cut the lead to 5-1 before Charlie Backus scored his first of the year in the 75th minute to push the lead back to five.
Tyler Knierim gave up the lone Falcon (3-9-1) goal, while Kyle Talbot made the only save of the match after he subbed in during the 79th minute.
The Bulldogs secured a key regional win on Wednesday and will look to pick up win number 12 on the season this Friday when they host Principia (Ill.) College at 3 pm.
