Oct. 19, 2009 – The Truman women’s soccer team won its ninth straight match on Monday, cruising to a 3-0 win against Northwest Missouri on a sunny afternoon in Kirksville. Senior Katie Hinrichs, freshman Olivia Hayes and junior Beth Bystrom all scored for Truman, who moved to 11-2-2 overall and 10-1 in the MIAA with the win.
Hinrichs headed in a feed – her second in as many games – from fellow senior Katie Reuck in the 25th minute to give Truman a 1-0 lead, before freshman Olivia Hayes logged her MIAA-best 11th goal of the season in the 40th minute for a two-goal Truman edge. Hayes corralled a long pass from senior defender Theresa Bauler in the open field and beat Northwest (9-5-1, 5-5-1 MIAA) goalkeeper Kira Lazenby to help Truman move its all-time series record against Northwest to 20-0.
Bystrom then added the game’s exclamation point off her own rebound in the 68th minute following a Megan Buri corner kick.
The Bulldogs dominated possession throughout, out-shooting the Bearcats 16-8 for the match, including 11-4 on goal. Seven ’Dogs fired shots at Lazenby, led by Bystrom’s four and Hayes’ two. Sophomore goalie Jayne Grisham recorded her seventh shutout of the season, stopping four Bearcat attempts that mostly came from outside 20 yards.
Truman will travel to Missouri Southern on Friday night for a 7 pm battle with the Lions. The Bulldogs shutout MSSU, 4-0, in Kirksville on Sept. 24.
Additional Notes:
- Senior Kristin Haluszczak played in her 80th career contest, moving into a tie for ninth all-time with Heather Murray and Kim Wolff. She needs just one more match played to move into a tie for seventh all-time. The program’s all-time games played record currently is 85.
- Grisham moved into a tie for ninth all-time in both games played (21) and minutes played (1793 minutes, 11 seconds).
- Hayes has already scored more goals in a single-season than any Bulldog since 2005. Sara Murray, in 2004, scored 15 in her final season at Truman.
