Sept. 27, 2009 – The Truman men’s soccer team controlled a 110-minute assault on the Newman University defense on Sunday afternoon, but the 11th-ranked Bulldogs couldn’t deliver the knockout punch in what turned into a 0-0 tie with the Jets in Wichita, Kansas. Truman did run its consecutive unbeaten streak to seven with the draw.
Despite out-shooting Newman, 31-10, for the match, the Bulldogs (6-1-1) settled for a draw when Jets goalkeeper James Esquivel kept all eight of Truman’s on-goal attempts out of the net. The attack continued the entire match, as Truman blasted double-digit shots in both halves before taking six attempts in the 20 minutes of overtime. Senior Ben Green (Victoria, B.C., Canada; Claremont Secondary) took a team-high seven shots, while junior teammate Matt Kimball (Kirkwood, Mo.; Kirkwood) fired five attempts off the bench.
Freshman goalkeeper Tyler Knierim (Hartsburg, Mo.; Southern Boone) got his fourth shutout of the season – and second straight – by stopping three Newman shots on goal, including one in the 83rd minute to help force OT.
Truman will wrap up its current seven-match road trip on Wednesday night at long-time rival Rockhurst (Mo.) University in Kansas City. Following that, the Bulldogs will return to the Truman Soccer Pitch for a South Central regional battle against Northeastern Oklahoma State on Friday afternoon at 12 pm.
