Sept. 12, 2009 – Two touchdowns in the first 1:10 of the ballgame propelled the
Aaron Harris returned the opening kickoff for the Mavericks 59 yards down to Truman’s 30 yard line and on the first play from scrimmage Bryce Hawthorne went untouched for the first score of the night.
Quarterback Phillip Davis was intercepted by Danny Pelster on the Bulldogs first play and two plays later Hawthorne again found the endzone for a 14-0 lead with just 1:06 off the first quarter clock.
The Mavericks would add a 32-yard field goal to make it 17-0 and later scored two more touchdowns to go up 31-0 at the half.
The Bulldogs gained just 224 yards of total offense and picked up 14 first downs. The penalty bug also caught up the ‘Dogs as they were flagged 11 times for 110 yards including two kick catching interference that set up short fields for UNO in the second quarter.
Freshman punter Eric Phillips improved on his season average after connecting on two 50-yard plus punts with a long of 62 and averaged 44.1 yards on the night.
Game Notes: Truman averaged just 3.3 yards per play compared to UNO’s 6.4 yards…UNO had 24 first downs compared to the 14 for the Bulldogs…The Bulldogs were 3-of-14 on third down conversions and missed on both fourth down conversions…Truman was shutout for the first time since
