Sept. 6, 2009 – Jonathan Brown’s free kick blast in the 66th minute from 20 yards away proved to be Saturday night’s game-winner, as the Truman men’s soccer team captured the 2009 Quincy Bowl with a 2-1 win against Quincy University. The Bulldogs were the only team to go 2-0 in the event after defeating Christian Brothers (Tenn.) on Friday evening.

Playing in their first QU Bowl since 2005, the Bulldogs fell behind in the second minute of Saturday night’s affair when Hawks’ striker Corey Eatherton put home a rebound to give the host squad a quick lead.

However, the Bulldogs were able to keep the pressure on all night and struck pay-dirt in the 25th minute on Bobby Larkin’s second goal of the season. Larkin tallied an unassisted goal from just outside the 18-yard box following a re-start after a Quincy foul.

Both squads had opportunities throughout the night, but Truman capitalized on a key one midway through the second half when the Hawks committed a foul near the box with 24 minutes left on the clock. Brown found the back of the net, giving the Bulldogs a one-goal edge which was enough for freshman goalkeeper Tyler Knierim and a Truman defense that combined for five saves on the evening.

Truman picked up its third straight win, outshooting QU 15-12 and taking nine corner kicks to just four for the Hawks. The Bulldogs moved to 3-1 on the season with the win, while QU dropped to 1-2.

The Bulldogs will be back in action with a 4 pm match in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, on Friday, Sept. 11 at Iowa Wesleyan College. Truman last met the Tigers – who are 0-3 so far in 2009 – on Oct. 16 in Kirksville where the Bulldogs picked up a 5-0 win.
