TOPEKA, Kan. – A key error by Washburn in the top of the ninth in game one allowed the Truman baseball to pick up a 4-3 series-opening extra-inning win, before the Bulldogs returned the favor in the nightcap - allowing the winning run to reach on an error and score on a walk-off homerun in game two’s 7-5 Ichabod win.

A 3-3 tie after seven innings spelled extras for the second straight contest for Truman – who came out on top after a 15-inning marathon on Tuesday afternoon. With two outs in the top of the ninth though in Friday’s game one, sophomore 3B Drew Garwood singled and advanced to second on an error by WU CF Brian Gorges. Freshman C Pete Jurich singled in his at-bat, plating Garwood as the go-ahead run.

Tyler Stefan – in relief of starter Kyle Veazey – closed out the bottom of the ninth for his first win of the season. Veazey went 6.1 innings and gave up just one earned run, while Stefan pitched a scoreless 2.2 innings of relief to pick up the victory.

The Bulldogs used a late rally to tie the score at five heading to the seventh inning in game two, but a Garwood error put the first Washburn runner on base. After a sacrifice bunt, Brett Sorenson homered to end game two off Eric Radel, who was the fourth Bulldog pitcher of the game and entered to start the seventh.

Steven Rose, Kenny Swanson and Jeff Davison accounted for seven of Truman’s eight hits in game two, while Garwood was the only with multiple hits in game one. Freshman Seth Huninghake started game two for the Bulldogs but lasted just 2.1 innings – giving up four runs and four walks, while striking out three.

Truman (11-38, 7-27 MIAA) and Washburn (19-25, 12-18) will wrap up their four-game set tomorrow afternoon with a 1 pm doubleheader.
