KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Truman tennis teams wrapped up the regular season portion of the 2009 season on Wednesday afternoon in Kansas City against Rockhurst (Mo.) University. The Hawks picked up wins on both sides, with the Bulldog women falling, 6-3, and the Bulldog men dropping a 9-0 decision.
Sophomore Kelsey Kuykendall and freshmen Ellen Russell and Dagmar Velez won their singles matches for Truman (15-4) , as Velez and Kuykendall won in straight sets while Russell benefited from her opponent retiring midway through the second set.
Truman’s men (7-5) were swept in straight sets at five of six singles positions, while Kyle Schlotz extended his match to a super-tiebreaker before falling in it, 10-5.
The two teams will each move on to the MIAA tournament this weekend in Kansas City at the Plaza Tennis Center. The men’s squad will open at 10 am on Saturday against Emporia State and will play again later that day at 4 pm. The women have to wait for a pre-tournament draw to determine the Nos. 2-4 seeds, as the Bulldogs finished the MIAA regular season tied in the conference standings with Northwest Missouri and Nebraska-Omaha. Regardless of the results of that draw, they will open with a first-round match on Saturday at 12:30 pm before wrapping up play that evening with another match at 6:30 pm.
