April 15, 2009 – One of the nation’s top pitchers held the Truman Bulldogs scoreless in the first game and a big fifth inning by the Jennies of Central Missouri gave them an MIAA doubleheader sweep on Wednesday afternoon in
Megan Leonard, who entered the game with a 69 2/3 inning scoreless streak, was able to escape untouched as she scattered three hits in a 3-0 victory.
Central got a pair of unearned runs in the second inning when an errant throw by Mary Manley hit Abby Dickson in the back to allow two runs to score. Dickson was retired on the play trying to take an extra base.
The Bulldogs biggest threat came in the fourth as Erica LaCombe singled and Rebekah Shea reached on a fielder’s choice. LaCombe beat the throw at second.
Manly however popped out and Kali Holleran grounded out but moved the runners into scoring position. Richelle vanGennip couldn’t come up with the big hit as she flied out to left to end the inning.
Tracy Anderson added an insurance run in the sixth with a solo home run.
Leonard ran her record to 14-1 and recorded seven strikeouts without walking a Bulldog.
In the second game, former Truman player Jesse Shelman led off the game with a solo home run to right center and the Jennies added runs in both the second and third innings to take a 3-0 lead.
Dani Mayer reached on a one-out walk in the Bulldog half of the third. Mayer then stole second and advanced to third when the ball got away on the throw. Mayer came in on a groundout by LaCombe to cut the deficit to two.
However the Jennies scored six times on five hits in the top of the fifth. The big hits in the inning were supplied by Kasey Martin with a two-run single and Anderson with a two-out, two-run basehit.
Lindsey Wagaman closed the door on the ‘Dogs in the bottom of the inning to pick up here fourth win of the season. Wagaman gave up just two hits to Truman, one to vanGennip and the other to Lindsey Rock.
The Bulldogs are now 10-25 overall and 2-10 in the MIAA while the Jennies remain perfect in the league at 12-0 and 28-8 overall. Truman will face Northwest Missouri on Friday in
