KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – It took five hours, but the Truman women’s tennis team picked up a key regional and MIAA win in its home finale Tuesday night by holding off Northwest Missouri State, 5-4, at the Truman tennis courts. The Northwest men, ranked No. 25 in the nation, shut out the Bulldog men, 9-0.

After picking up two of the three doubles matches, the Bulldog women (14-3, 6-2 MIAA) held a 4-2 lead after the first three singles contests finished – picking up straight-set wins at Nos. 1 and 2. But back-to-back wins at Nos. 4 and 5 for the Bearcats (12-3, 6-2 MIAA) turned all the action to Kelsey Kuykendall’s No. 6 match against Northwest’s Brittney Browning. Kuykendall pulled away midway through each set and picked up the clinching 6-3, 6-2 win.

Entering the match, the Bulldogs were ranked 11th in the South Central region and sat one spot behind Northwest Missouri. The match also wrapped up conference play for both squads, and the two teams will wait for Nebraska-Omaha’s (8-8, 5-2 MIAA) final MIAA match against Emporia State (7-5, 2-3 MIAA) to determine seedings for the upcoming conference tournament.

On the men’s side, the Bearcats (13-4, 4-1 MIAA) took the three doubles matches before adding straight set wins in five of the six singles contests. Colin Boswell took Northwest’s Giovanni Auricchio to a super-tiebreaker at No. 5 singles before falling 6-2, 5-7, 11-9.

The Truman (6-4, 2-3 MIAA) men will have the No. 4 seed in the upcoming conference tournament and will face either Emporia State (6-6, 0-3 MIAA) or Nebraska-Omaha (5-8. 0-4 MIAA) in a first-round match on April 25th.

Both squads will travel to Quincy (Ill.) University for a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon.
