April 3, 2009 – The Bulldog softball team suffered two walk-off defeats on Friday afternoon in MIAA play against Fort Hays State. Truman lost 6-5 in the first game and 1-0 in 10 innings in the nightcap. Truman is scheduled to host Drury University on Sunday in Kirksville.
Truman had a 3-0 lead over the Tigers in the first game after scoring two runs in the second on hits by Richelle vanGennip and Katie Pitts. Dani Mayer added another RBI single in the third to extend the lead.
vanGennip struck out five straight Tigers before allowing a two-out RBI in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the fifth, Fort Hays plated one more run but Truman added some insurance in the top of the sixth.
A throwing error brought Mayer home and vanGennip collected her second RBI with a single up the middle to give the Bulldogs a 5-2 advantage. Truman tried to add one more in the seventh but Erica LaCombe was thrown out at the plate.
Ashley Rotkvich, who came in during the fifth inning, could not close things out. A lead off error and two straight singles loaded the bases for the Tigers.
Back-to-back singles scored two runs apiece giving the Tigers a 6-5 victory.
The pitching took over in the second game as neither team could dent the scoreboard. Truman stranded eight runners and had five hits while the Tigers left 10 on base and nearly won the game in the seventh inning again.
Lindsey Rock threw out the potential winning run on a base hit to left field in the bottom of the seventh. vanGennip got the inning ending fielders choice to strand two Tigers and send the game to extra innings.
Playing the international tie-break rule in the 10th inning, the Tigers were able to get the winner when the runner from second came into score on a wild throw by vanGennip on a ball hit back to her.
Fort Hays improves to 21-20 on the season while Truman drops to 8-19 overall.
