TOPEKA, KAN. – The Truman tennis squads split a pair of matches this weekend against Emporia State and Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. Both squads will travel across the state of Missouri to meet Lewis (Ill.) on the SIU-Edwardsville campus on Sunday.

 

Washburn Recap

March 28 – Both the Bulldog men’s and women’s tennis teams ran into tough Washburn squads on Saturday, as the Truman women dropped their first dual of the season, 6-0, while the Bulldog men fell, 5-0, to the Ichabods.

 

Sophomore Amy Ochs was able to reach a second-set tiebreak, but Truman (10-1, 3-1 MIAA) lost all three doubles matches as well as the top-three singles matches, which rendered the final three singles competitions unfinished.

 

The Truman men (4-2, 1-2 MIAA) didn’t have much luck either, as WU garnered a 3-0 lead after singles play and closed out Nos. 1 and 3 singles to wrap up a 5-0 win.

 

Emporia State Recap

March 27 - Truman tennis swept a pair of duals with MIAA-foe Emporia State University on Friday afternoon at the Wood Valley Indoor Tennis Complex in Topeka, Kan.. The Bulldog women came from behind to win 5-4, while the men held on in singles play, 5-3.

 

Despite falling behind 2-1 after doubles action, the women’s squad remained undefeated on the season by picking up straight-set singles wins at Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 6. With Truman (10-0, 3-0 MIAA) dropping both Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, sophomore Kelsey Kuykendall was the lone Bulldog to win both of her matches. It marked the ninth win in a row in singles action for Kuykendall.

 

On the men’s side, Truman garnered a 2-1 lead in doubles play, winning Nos. 1 and 2, then picked up a straight-set win by Steven Hipkiss at No. 1 singles and tie-breaker wins by both Eric McCullough and Colin Boswell to pick up their first MIAA win of the season. The men moved to 4-1 overall (1-1 MIAA) on the season.
