March 20, 2009 – The Bulldog wrestling team was named the 2008-09 Academic National Champion for the fifth time in the programs history and third consecutive year.  Truman is the first school to win three straight academic championships and ties Colorado School of Mines for five overall Division II titles.

The Bulldogs, under head coach David Schutter, had a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.467.  The team GPA is calculated by averaging the cumulative grade point averages of ten wrestlers from each team of which eight of those wrestlers must have competed in their team’s NCAA Division II National Qualifying tournament.

Nine Truman wrestlers were named to the individual all-Academic team.  Junior Dean Schultz was a second team honoree while Jeffery Bise, Matthew Craig, Kazuyuki Hashimoto, Bryan Isbell, Stephen Kueny, Chad Kurvoski, Thomas Redmon and Vince Vitatoe were designated Honorable Mention.

Truman’s previous championships were in 1996-97, 2001-02, 2006-07 and 2007-08.
