March 18, 2009 – The Truman softball team has now won four in-a-row and five of their last six games as they took a doubleheader from Quincy University on Wednesday afternoon in Kirksville.  The Bulldogs defeated the Hawks 5-4 and 2-1 and will again face Quincy on Saturday at the Missouri Western Ramada Inn Classic.

 

Things started out in favor of the visiting Hawks as they jacked two solo home runs in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. 

 

The Bulldogs used some small ball to get on the scoreboard in the third.  Sierra Baechle led off with a walk and both Alex Weber and Kali Holleran reached on fielder’s choices.  Rebekah Shea coxed a walk to load the bases.

 

After a passed ball that scored Weber, Dani Meyer delivered the big hit with a 2-run double to give Truman the lead.  Stephanie Johnson would add another run with an RBI single.

 

Baechle they picked up a key two-out RBI in the fifth when she singled in Richelle vanGennip to make the score 5-2.

 

Ashley Rotkvich, who came in following Johnson’s three-inning start, got the first two Hawks in the seventh before Erin Gregory and Missy Weaver went back-to-back and made the score 5-4. 

 

Rotkvich got Melissa Sommerfield to ground out to preserve the victory.

 

Truman struck first in the second game after Kali Holleran drew a one-out walk.  She advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI double by Shea to right center field.  Johnson followed after a sac bunt by Mayer that put Shea at third, with a single to left.

 

vanGennip then weaved her way through the Hawks lineup allowing just four hits while striking out three until the seventh.  With one out, Jasmyn Wentland left the yard in left to pull Quincy back to within one run.

 

However vanGennip retired the next two hitters for her second win this season.

 

The Bulldogs are now 8-11 overall while Quincy drops to 9-15.

 

The two teams will meet again on Saturday as part of the Missouri Western Ramada Inn Tournament; the Bulldogs will also face Concordia-St. Paul, Upper Iowa and Wayne State (Neb.).
