Feb. 4, 2009 – An 8-0 run by the Washburn Ichabods lifted them to a one-point half time lead and propelled them to a 68-50 victory over the Truman men’s basketball team on Wednesday night in Topeka. Truman will host Southwest Baptist on Saturday in “Pack Pershing Purple” day; students wearing purple will have a chance to win free books from the University Bookstore.
Truman (6-15/1-13 MIAA) dominated the early portion of the game first taking a six-point lead just 2:50 seconds into the contest and then after a pair of deep baskets from Ethan Freeman and Brian Nwelue, led by seven with 4:46 left in the half.
The Ichabods (13-8/9-5 MIAA) closed out the half with a pair of dunks, one by James Williams to start the rally and another by Darnell Kimble to close the half to put Washburn up 27-26.
Washburn opened the second half going on a 13-5 run over the first six-plus minutes. Banks Estridge knocked down a three-pointer and Patrick Fandja followed with a basket to pull the Bulldogs back to within four.
DeAndre Eggins completed a three-point play to push the lead back to seven. Vesko Filchev then missed on the ensuing Truman possession and Washburn capitalized on two straight offensive rebounds before Covier Carter matched the ‘Bods largest lead at 45-36.
Truman was outscored 12-3 over the next two minutes as Washburn was able to put the game away.
Brandon Griffin led Truman in scoring with 10 points and also had a team-high nine rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 37% from the field and were just 10-of-21 at the foul line.
Washburn was paced by 13 points from Eggins and 10 each from Kimble and Carter. The Ichabods shot 40% for the game but knocked down eight treys and were 16-of-20 at the charity stripe.
The Bulldogs return home on Saturday afternoon to face nationally-ranked Southwest Baptist at 3:00 p.m.
