Apr. 22, 2008 – Chris Kovach earned the MIAA Men’s Golf Freshman of the Year award after placing third at the conference championship tournament.  Kovach also was named all-MIAA, while junior Scott Danielsen earned honorable mention all-conference.

The tournament was held at Branson Creek Golf Course in Hollister, Mo. with teams playing 36-holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs finished the first 18 holes with a 314 score and was in a battle with five other schools for third place.  The team dropped off a bit in the second round to a 323 and finally finished with a 322 to place seventh in the event.

Kovach was in second place after the first two rounds after carding a two-over par 73 and a one-over 72.  He had seven birdies over the first 36 holes.

On the final day, Kovach was two-under with five holes to play but after a weather delay, bogeyed four of those five to finish with a two-over 73.  He finished just one shot back of Ryan Deutsch of Washburn and Justin Yoder of Central Missouri.  Deutsch would win the individual title on a playoff hole.

The Bulldogs finished in sixth place overall in the conference standings with 16.5 points and now will await word from the NCAA regarding a berth to the NCAA Division II Super Regional tournament.  The top eight teams in the region along with the top five individuals of non-advancing teams will play May 5-7 in Findlay, Ohio.

Kovach becomes the first recipient of the MIAA Freshman of the Year award in golf.  He had three top-10 finishes in the five conference scoring events this season.
